What's New!

After viewing the summer playgrounds of the Hapsburg monarchs, anyone with a love of history should head to Konditorei Zauner, Pfarrgasse 7 (tel. 06132/2331020;, the oldest pastry shop and coffeehouse in Austria. The imperial court used to order pastries here, and it was said that the easiest way to tap into the pulse of the empire was to eavesdrop on a nearby table during July and August. The cafe’s guest book shows a clientele as rich and diverse as the pastry offerings.

You can buy the exquisite pastries from the gold-and- white rococo showroom (which has been renovated to handle the flood of summer tourists) or eat at the small tables in a series of elegant inner rooms. Many items can be mailed as gifts. Sandwiches and salads are also on the menu. Coffee costs 2.95€ ($4.70), with pastries starting at 4€ ($6.40). It’s open daily 8:30am to 6pm.
